Fuel quality frequently asked questions
Straightforward technical answers about fuel treatment, microbial testing, water in diesel, stored petrol and practical maintenance decisions.
Fuel quality and product selection
These answers distinguish testing, water management and treatment so that the selected action addresses the actual condition. Open a question for a practical explanation and links to further guidance.
What is the difference between fuel treatment and fuel testing?
Fuel testing helps establish a condition or identify a specific problem; fuel treatment is a separate intervention selected for a defined purpose. FUELSTAT is a microbial field-test system, not an additive. Fuel Right treatments have product-specific applications that must be checked against the fuel type and technical instructions.
Can one test determine whether stored fuel is fit for use?
No. Microbial testing, water assessment, particulate analysis and relevant fuel-specification testing answer different questions. A result from one method should not be presented as a comprehensive fuel-quality certificate. See sampling and testing guidance.
What is diesel bug?
“Diesel bug” is an informal term for microbial contamination associated with fuel systems. Water and suitable environmental conditions can support microbial growth. Confirm the suspected problem through appropriate inspection and testing rather than diagnosing solely from dark sludge or a blocked filter. See microbial growth in diesel.
Does Aquafighter remove free water at the bottom of a tank?
Aquafighter is designed primarily for water management within suitable diesel tanks, including emulsified water. Conidia advises draining or vacuuming substantial free water before installation; heavily contaminated tanks may require cleaning first. See Aquafighter product guidance and Conidia’s installation instructions.
Can Aquafighter be left in a vehicle or boat tank while operating?
Do not assume so. Conidia instructs users to remove Aquafighter before operating vehicles, machinery or boats where movement or internal tank components create interference risk. It is intended for use while the tank is stationary under the applicable instructions. Confirm tank access and safe retrieval before selection.
Does Aquafighter kill microbes or clean tank sludge?
No. Aquafighter is a water-management product, not a biocide or tank-cleaning service. Conidia recommends cleaning heavily contaminated tanks and using appropriate microbial testing where needed. Read water in diesel and tank contamination guidance.
What does FUELSTAT measure?
FUELSTAT products provide on-site testing for specified fuel-associated microorganisms. The correct One or Plus kit and fuel variant must be selected. The result does not quantify total water, particulate loading or every possible cause of poor fuel condition. See FUELSTAT One and Plus.
Are FUELSTAT One and Plus the same test?
No. Conidia describes FUELSTAT One as an app-assisted quantitative system and Plus as a rapid semi-quantitative field screening method. Available diesel and jet variants are distinct. Follow the current kit instructions for sample preparation, interpretation and reporting. Manufacturer details for Plus.
Are Fuel Right products suitable for both petrol and diesel?
Compatibility is formulation-specific. Do not assume every Fuel Right product suits every petrol blend or diesel application. Check the current technical data for the exact product and the equipment maker’s requirements. In particular, petrol suitability must not be inferred for Fuel Right 30K without confirmed manufacturer documentation. See product information.
Can a fuel additive reverse petrol phase separation?
Do not assume it can. Suspected ethanol–water phase separation in petrol requires careful assessment of the fuel and tank. Adding more petrol or an unspecified additive may not restore safe fuel quality. See boat petrol and E10 guidance.
What should I do when diesel filters keep blocking?
Record the filter history and operating symptoms, inspect the fuel system and obtain appropriate samples. Water, solids, microbial residues and degraded fuel can require different responses. Repeated filter replacement without identifying the source may not resolve the problem. See blocked diesel filters.
When should a diesel tank be cleaned instead of treated?
Significant free water, heavy sludge, severe contamination or physical defects may require drainage, tank cleaning, repair or fuel replacement. Chemical treatment and in-tank water management do not substitute for necessary physical remediation. See fuel polishing versus fuel treatment.
How often should stored fuel be checked?
Set a risk-based inspection and sampling plan reflecting fuel turnover, storage duration, water ingress, equipment criticality and prior findings. Follow the applicable equipment, site and fuel specifications. A standby generator tank may need a different programme from a frequently replenished fleet tank. See generator fuel maintenance.
